Dry rot is the defining siding problem in this region, and the name is misleading: it is caused by fungus that needs moisture, and by the time you can see it from outside, it has usually been working on the wall for several seasons. The places we find it most are the places water concentrates — under windows, at deck ledgers and railing penetrations, behind failed kick-out flashing where a roof meets a wall, at butt joints where caulk has opened, and anywhere siding sits too close to grade or roofing.

A repair worth paying for addresses the cause, not just the symptom. Cutting out a soft board and putting a new one in the same unflashed, unsealed detail simply resets the clock. On our repairs we open the area far enough to see sound material, verify and correct the barrier and flashing behind it, replace damaged sheathing or framing, then install and finish new material to match. Where existing product has been discontinued, we will source the closest available profile and tell you plainly how visible the transition will be.

We are also straight about the economics. If rot is widespread, or the wall assembly was built without a functioning drainage plane, repair money is money spent twice — and we will say so and quote a full replacement instead. Emergency situations, like an open wall after storm or impact damage, we will dry in first and schedule the permanent repair after.
